Our one day course is perfect for anyone who owns a fixed or handheld marine VHF radio. A radio is an important piece of safety equipment on board and it is vital to understand the correct procedures.
The Short Range Certificate is the minimum qualification required by law to control the operation of VHF and VHF Digital Selective Calling (DSC) equipment on any British flagged vessel voluntarily fitted with a radio either fixed or hand held.
The price includes your course certificate but excludes your RYA Certification Fee.

Delivered over one day, this course provides an introduction to the use of a marine VHF radio, equipped with a Digital Selective Calling (DSC) facility.
You will be taught through a mixture of theory and practical learning. The course ends with an assessment for the certificate, which is required for the operator’s licence.
The syllabus is taught with a ratio of 12:1 students to instructor and the £60 exam fee is paid separately to the RYA (details on this are provided within the booking confirmation).
Our RYA Marine Radio Short Range Certificate course is also available as an online learning course delivered via the RYA’s Interactive online learning course. This enables you to complete the course at your own pace with our instructors on hand to guide you, should you need it.
An RYA VHF Handbook will be posted to you once you are registered on the course, or you can go paperless and opt for a e-book. Just let our lovely sales team know which you’d prefer.
Please note on completion of the course you will need to arrange an RYA Marine Short Range Radio exam at an accredited centre to achieve the certification. There will be no extra cost if you choose to complete the exam within the VHF training room with us at SWAC, but other training centres my charge you.
Upon successful completion of the course and examination, you’ll be awarded Marine Radio Short Range Certification.
