Young Footballers Show Off Their Skills At Electric Finale

Ashgate Football Champions

Young footballers showed off their skills and talent in an electric finale to the Derbyshire Football Plus League and Championship competitions.

Nine teams representing districts from across the county congregated at Active Nation’s Etwall Leisure Centre on Thursday for the finals – which saw Ashgate Croft School and Eckington School keep their cool in the blazing sunshine to wrap up their respective titles.

The competitions are part of the Competition Plus calendar of events organised by the Derbyshire School Sport Plus Group and targets young people with special educational needs and/or a disability from mainstream and special schools.

Ashgate Croft School posted an unbeaten record of played three, won three, in wrapping up the Football Plus League title.

Disability Sport Development Officer Andy Fuller said: “Their march to the title was characterised by electric attacking play and a stingy defence. Over the course of the tournament they averaged 2 goals a game whilst avoiding conceding any.”

In the Football Plus Championship competition the title was decided in the last game of the tournament. Heanor Gate Science College headed into the final game with Eckington only needing a draw to take the title having won all their preceding games.

Eckington had already lost to local rivals The Bolsover School in an earlier fixture and so needed to beat Heanor Gate Science College to draw level on points and take the title on the head-to-head record. In a game which saw both teams rack up chances, Eckington managed to hold on for an exciting 3-2 victory.

Andy added: “A great deal of talent was displayed throughout the competitions – particularly in the finals. Well done to everyone who took part, we look forward to seeing you all again next season.”
