Weight Loss has Inspired Ian To Help Others

Losing 6 stone in just 16 months has transformed Ian Gregory’s life and certainly made him worthy of our Local Hero title.

At his heaviest Ian tipped the scales at 21 stone, but since taking up his weight loss challenge he has lost 14 inches from around his waist and is about to embark on a new career to help others to do the same.

It was when Ian’s wife of 34 years, Janet, was diagnosed with Type Two diabetes and wanted to lose some weight that he decided to take up the challenge and join her for mutual support.

Sixteen months later with the help of a weight loss group and staff at Bittern Leisure Centre, the pair have lost nearly ten stone between them. Janet has lost three-and-a-half stone, but more importantly her blood sugar levels have dropped to a healthy range.

The 56-year-old grandad of two said: “I’m so much happier, mind and body. My confidence has returned as well as my self esteem. It’s an amazing feeling.”

Ian says he is no longer body conscious and now regularly swims, works out at Bittern Leisure Centre, plays golf and enjoys Tai Chi – as well as playing football in the park with his grandson without getting breathless. He’s even planning to do a charity skydive next year.

Ian now hopes he can inspire and help as many people as possible at his group.

“It’s important for people to know they are not alone. Don’t put your life on hold. You can do something about it. I just wish I’d done something about it earlier.”

For more information about Ian’s Monday evening group from 7.30pm at Fawley British Legion in Blackfield contact him on 07837 722594.
