Under Starters Orders

More than 2,500 runners from around the country were under starter’s orders for the English Schools Athletics Association National Cross Country Championships on Saturday 16th March.

The annual event, supported by Active Nation, was hosted at Catton Park in South Derbyshire. This event is the national event for all English School Counties, with 45 counties taking part.

The English Schools’ Athletics Association National Cross Country Championships was organised by the Derbyshire Schools’ Sports Association (DSSA) Athletics Section with support from Derbyshire Sport, together with the English Schools’ Athletic Association.

More than 4,000 people turned up to brave the mud and the weather to either spectate or compete in the event.

Race distances for competitors ranged from 3,400m for the Junior Girls race, to 6,480m for the Senior Boys race. There were events for Junior Boys, Inter Girls, Inter Boys and Senior Girls.

From the results of the various races, teams were chosen to represent English Schools in the SIAB Schools’ International Cross-Country Event between the home countries in Wales later in March. The event is held annually and runners from the Junior and Intermediate age groups compete.

Ken Bray, Secretary of the English Schools’ Athletic Association, said: “I’m delighted that this year’s English Schools Athletics Association National Cross Country Championships was held in Derbyshire.

“Catton Park is a fantastic venue and it is also clear that there is a huge passion for sport in the county. The hard work done by volunteers in the lead up to the event and on the day will ensure that young people from across the country will enjoy taking part in an event to be proud of.”
