Pupils Being Put Through Their Paces At Birchwood
Primary school pupils are being put through their paces at Birchwood Leisure Centre thanks to a new partnership.
As part of Active Nation’s campaign to persuade the nation to be active we have opened our doors to pupils from Birchwood Primary School to help improve their fitness levels and inspire them to take up exercise.
As part of a six week project, pupils from the school will be taking part in a series of specifically design circuit training classes that will increase their heart rates and motivate them to take up sport.
Birchwood Leisure Centre’s Geoff Tait said: “By the look on their faces at the end, we not only worked them extremely hard, but they had fun doing it.”
Year 6 teacher Julieanne Cochrane started the initiative. She said: “The children enjoyed the lesson and learnt so much about circuit training and their own personal fitness levels.
“I approached Birchwood Leisure Centre regarding setting up a link as I felt that it was important for the children to access sporting opportunities in their own community. It may encourage the children to attend sessions with their parents and also provides the opportunity to access a range of different sports taught by highly trained professionals.
“The government has allocated funds to promote a healthy lifestyle and as a school we are interested in developing all their talents – be it academic or physical. The children found the sessions demanding, but are enjoying the challenge.”
Geoff added: “It would be great if this could lead other local schools using us as part of their curriculum, so not only are we persuading the nation to be Active, but we are helping to start children off on a lifetime of sport and exercise.”
