New Course Delivers A Chance To Box

Boxing

Active Nation is joining forces with a local fighter to help youngsters box their way to success.

Jack Craig, a retired amateur boxer, will be running a series of Amateur Boxing Association (ABA) non-contact classes for 8 to 14 year olds at Yarborough Leisure Centre.

Jack first started boxing when he was 9 and spent many years training and fighting in the ring. He firmly believes that the course helps to boost confidence, discipline and fitness among those taking part.

He said: “This is an introduction to the basics of boxing and a healthy lifestyle. The course is non-contact giving youngsters the opportunity to gain skills in the sport before opting to train in an ABA registered gym or to just box for fun in a Boxercise class.

“The use of the ABA boxing awards have had a positive effect on the young people I have delivered these sessions to and I hope to continue to make a difference through the use of these projects and the greatest sport in the world … boxing.”

Those taking part will follow the ABA’s first three awards – Preliminary, Standard and Bronze – which are all non-contact, but are a great introduction into the world of amateur boxing. Don’t worry if you are unable to attend all of the sessions as with some extra effort you will still be able to collect your award.

Jack added: “Boxing is the ultimate challenge and changed my life. Boxing has made me a disciplined person not only with training, but also in my every day life. It has helped me keep a clear head during rough times and has kept me in tremendous shape over the last twenty years.

“Boxing has had a positive influence in my life and I’m glad, because without it I might have gone down a bad road like many of my friends who ended up on the wrong path. Everyone is equal in a boxing gym. Everyone respects each other regardless of age, ability or size and this for me is what makes boxing the ultimate sport.”
