Work has begun on a new £460,000 3G artificial grass football pitch at Etwall Leisure Centre in South Derbyshire.

The new state of the art pitch will be a fantastic venue for the development of football in the local area, making particular benefit to pupils of John Port School, local clubs and South Derbyshire residents.

Councillor John Lemmon, Chairman of Housing and Community Services at South Derbyshire District Council, said: “This is excellent news for the local area and we are delighted to be turning our vision into a reality.”

“It is essential that communities are able to access facilities where they can be safe and enjoy quality coaching. Playing sport can teach people – especially youngsters – essential life skills such as communication and teamwork.”

“These amenities are for everyone to enjoy, irrespective of the level they play. However, for a talented few, this may well be where the next generation of elite players learn their trade.”

Thousands are expected to use the facility per week, including players from Hilton Harriers Football Club. Secretary Maxine Harlow said: “This is such a welcome boost to grassroots football and will provide a high quality training destination for young and older players alike.”

The 3G pitch is part of South Derbyshire District Council’s plans to create an Olympic legacy. The project has been made possible by the Football Foundation, John Port School and South Derbyshire District Council.
