Active Nation is among 13 leisure and cultural trusts to receive a share of £571,112 of National Lottery funding from the Make Your Move programme – designed to offer more opportunities for communities across England to get active.

Active Nation has teamed up with Pendle Leisure Trust and Slimming World to help more than 1,000 people from Pendle and Southampton to get moving.

Every week hundreds of Slimming Word members meet at Active Nation’s Chamberlayne Leisure Centre in the city and the idea is to enhance all of their hard work and brilliant progress by offering easy access to exercise at a subsidised rate.

The Saints v Syns project will enable these members and others from across Southampton to access Active Nation venues, classes and equipment to help get them moving during the one-year pilot project.

The innovative programme has been awarded £49,800 of Sport England Lottery cash to help this happen and will also feedback vital research on the barriers and motivations to physical activity. The total value of the project will be more than £100,000 with in-kind contributions from key partners Active Nation and Slimming World.

The Sport England National Lottery Funding is part of a three-year, £2 million project, called ‘Make Your Move’, which aims to increase opportunities to participate in sport at a local level in innovative and creative ways. Trusts were able to apply for up to £50,000 and the funding is being distributed by Sporta, the representative body for leisure and cultural trusts in the UK.

Brian Leonard, Sporta’s CEO said: “By funding projects designed by local trusts and created specifically for local people, the ‘Make Your Move’ campaign can make a real difference to local people. This, in turn, offers true benefits to these trusts’ local communities.”

Active Nation’s partnership manager Southampton Ross McClean said: “The funding that we have received from Sport England via Sporta’s ‘Make Your Move’ campaign is essential to secure sports’ participation for our local community. It will allow us to offer enhanced services to local people, further developing participation in exercise in this area.”

Sport England’s Director of Property, Charles Johnston, said: “Leisure trusts play a key part in delivering high quality sports projects in towns and cities across the country. This investment in the 13 projects for Sporta’s Make Your Move programme will give people the opportunity to take part in a way that most suits them, and get more people, more active, more often.”

Was thrilled when Ross and I received the news. I am looking forward to what’s in store for my members at Chamberlayne and for any new members that come along. Having lost 9 stone with Slimming World myself I know how grateful I was for the help Active Nation gave me in setting myself some exercise goals or as we say at Slimming World Body Magic awards. Slimming World offers such a great choice with everyday, normal foods with the combination of Body Magic weaved in you have a healthy lifestyle for life shifting those unwanted pounds and toning too.
