Kirsty’s Running London Marathon To Say Thanks For Saving Her Dad
A member of the Active Nation team is putting her best foot forward and running the London Marathon to raise money for the radiotherapy unit that helped to save her dad’s life.
Kirsty Corbridge is based in the reception area at Clayton Green Sports Centre. Six years ago she took up running with a group of ladies at the South Ribble Runners, having never run before in her life, and is still a member of the group today.
Kirsty said: “In October 2012, my dad Laurie James Skuce was diagnosed with Prostate Cancer at the age of 77, he was lucky they caught it early as he had kept up to date with all his checks.
“In January 2013 he underwent 8 weeks of radiotherapy at the Rosemere Unit at Preston Hospital. He went every day, Monday to Friday and all of us have to say that all the staff were fantastic and got my Dad through a very difficult time.
“He has just had his 79th birthday and is doing very well – still managing to work part-time 3 afternoons a week. This is just my way of saying thank you to everybody who helped in my dad’s treatment and recovery.”
Kirsty will be among the 36,000 people running through the capital on April 13, after securing her place through the ballot system which attracts more than 100,000 applications each year.
Kirsty said: “I have not run many races as I do not really enjoy them but have done a few 10k’s, half marathons and 2 years ago ran the Brathay Marathon.
“I said I would never run in a marathon again unless I was lucky enough to get a ballot place in the London Marathon, it was my 3rd attempt at entering and I was one of the lucky ones to be chosen. I have decided that if I am running another marathon I should try and raise some money in the process.
“Although my dad thinks I am bonkers running the distance – I am sure he is secretly proud and even more so that I am raising some money for Rosemere.”

UPDATE!!! Kirsty successfully completed the London Marathon and has already secured her place for next year!
Kirsty said: “I loved it. It was very hot but I managed it in 3 hours 49 minutes so I have just qualified for a ‘good for age’ place for next year. I aim to do it even faster!
“I had my Garmin on and ended up doing over 28 miles with all the weaving in and out to try and get in front of people so I did 26.2 miles well before the 3 hours 49 minutes! It was a fantastic experience and would recommend anybody who is thinking of doing it to try and get a place!”
