Helping Sophie To Be A World Champ
Active Nation is supporting one of the country’s top Taekwondo fighters to reach her goal of becoming a World Champion.
Sophie Chatel, who is in her 3rd year studying English at the University of Lincoln, took up the sport 14 years ago and has been a member of the Britain National Poomsae Squad since 2009.
The 20-year-old has competed for Great Britain on many occasions medalling at international competitions, most recently at the Scottish International Championships where she fought and secured two Gold medals and a Silver. She also collected a Silver in the Belgium Open, Gold in the Finnish Open, and numerous medals at the London International Open. She also represented Great Britain at two European Championships and two World Championships where she obtained rankings, her best being 7th in Europe and 10th in the world. Sophie also got to carry the Olympic Torch in recognition of her sporting achievements.
In a bid to secure her dream at the World Championships, Sophie has embarked on a four year intense training programme, which is already delivering results. Sophie said: “Since I began my programme, I have already won the London Open International in a tough category, beating competitors I have never previously beaten. This is a huge achievement which has only spurred me on and made my dream of World Champion seem even more possible.
“My coach and I have a 4 year plan which will finish with me medalling at the World Championships, with International and European medals along the way. I have never been more motivated in my training and finally feel like I am on the right track to become a World Champion.”
Active Nation is helping Sophie to realise her dream by offering her free time on the Squash courts at Yarborough Leisure Centre as part of her new training programme. She will also be taking part in Yarborough Leisure Centre’s Half Term Sports Camp where she will be passing on her knowledge and experience to local youngsters.
