Gold Medallist Helping To Save Lives
Special Olympics Gold medallist and Etwall Leisure Centre lifeguard Ricky Blampied is an inspirational athlete certainly worthy of our Local Heroes title.
Ricky was born 16 weeks premature, suffered brain haemorrhages and contracted meningitis, but he has been extremely busy making his mark in the world of international gymnastics and will be competing for East Midlands in the Special Olympics GB.
The 21-year-old is already working poolside and has aspirations to use his own personal experience to help others by studying for his level 2 gym qualification.
Ricky said: “I am loving working for Active Nation and I really enjoy working with all the different types of people who use the centre.”
Ricky was selected by Team GB to compete in Shanghai for the 2006 Special Olympics. He competed in the all round gymnastics and secured 2 Golds – in the rings and pommel horse, and 4 silvers. Due to his amazing success and achievements he was asked to take part in the closing ceremony.
