Get Ready For The Biggest Winter Paralympic Games!
Russia will welcome the world back to Sochi today for the Winter Paralympics opening ceremony – including Active Nation’s Rising Star Jade Etherington.
Over the next 10 days, 575 athletes from 45 countries will be competing for 72 gold medals across 5 sports. This is the largest number of athletes and countries taking part since the Games were launched in 1976.
And all of the competition action is due to get under way tomorrow. Britain has sent a 15-strong-team to Sochi – competing in alpine skiing and wheelchair curling – as they attempt to win their first Winter Paralympic gold medal. The team have been set a tough target by UK Sport to return home with between 2 and 6 medals from Sochi.
Jade, who Active Nation has been supporting with her fitness training at Lincoln, is hoping to help the team reach this goal.
The trainee teacher competes in the slalom despite only having five percent of her vision. She was born with Axenfield’s syndrome, a genetic condition that causes fluid blockages in the eye and can lead to total blindness.
Jade skis with guide Caroline Powell, who skis in front of her and gives directions via radio. The pair are hoping to continue their successful season with many predicting a podium finish.
Jade said: “Our hopes for Sochi are to perform at our best and hopefully that will result in a podium for GB. Medals only come with the right preparations, conditions, strength and performance but, with all that, anything is possible.”
Jade and Caroline will be competing on: March 8th in the Downhill; March 10th in the Super-G; March 11th in the Super Combined; March 14th in the Slalom and on March 16th in the Giant Slalom.
Everyone at Active Nation will be cheering for Jade, Caroline and the rest of the team as they compete against the World’s best. Just a few weeks ago the country was gripped by Jenny Jones, Billy Morgan, our curlers and the rest of Team GB at the Winter Olympics, now it’s the turn of Jade and her inspirational team mates to take up the challenge in Sochi!
