‘Fresh Meat’ Needed at Roller Derby
One of the country’s fastest growing alternative sports is proving to be a huge hit at Chamberlayne Leisure Centre.
Roller derby, described as British bulldog or Quidditch on skates, is not a sport many people have heard of in the UK.
But after just a handful of sessions Southampton City Rollers, set up by Rebekah White, Laura Streets and Mhairi Morrison, already has 45 members.
Not content with that, the team are now on a recruitment drive and hope to be competing against teams from across the UK by October next year.
“Everyone can do it, there is nobody that isn’t welcome, it appeals to the fun side of sport and it doesn’t feel like you’re exercising, that’s just how much fun it is,” said Rebekah.
Laura added: “It gives women the opportunity to succeed and flourish in their own sport. Roller derby is a fast, full-contact sport that requires strength and agility – it’s a great work-out and it’s ridiculously fun! It also has a fantastic community, both nationally and internationally, so it’s a great way to meet people and make friends for life.
“Ask anyone who has ever been to a ‘Fresh Meat’ (beginners) session… roller derby makes you sweat! It’s a great cardio work-out but the core strength required to stay on your feet during a scrimmage will help you discover muscles you never knew existed!”
The team is looking for both women and men aged over 18 to try their hand at the sport, which is played by two teams of five, who roller skate in the same direction around a track.
One designated player, called the ‘jammer’, scores points by lapping members of the opposing team while their teammates attempt to assist them by hindering the opposing team’s ‘jammer’.
The Rollers will be holding sign-up sessions every Saturday from 3.20pm to 5.20pm at Active Nation’s Chamberlayne Leisure Centre.
Budding players should bring skates (preferably quads, not inlines), helmet, mouthguard, wrist guards, elbow and knee pads and a bottle of water to the sessions that cost £6.
