Dave’s Disappointment – No Longer Eligible To Compete In Glasgow
A dedicated athlete and former Commonwealth Games competitor is shocked and disappointed that he won’t be competing in Glasgow.
Active Nation Supporter and one of our Local Heroes, Dave Savage, has been training hard and preparing to represent his country of birth in the triathlon competition. However, after being told he is no longer eligible he is determined to help others to succeed in the sport he loves.
Dave said: “”It’s with huge regret that I will no longer be competing in the triathlon at the forthcoming Glasgow Commonwealth Games.
“I was elated to be told last summer I could once again compete for my birth nation of Kiribati (Central Pacific). I’ve since been told this is not actually the case as I am no longer considered eligible! This came as a huge shock, especially already having competed at the Manchester Games in 2002.”
Triathletes have to complete a 1,500m open swim, before switching to a 40km road cycle and finishing with a challenging 10km run. Unfortunately, Dave suffered a double puncture while competing in Manchester – adding to his determination to complete the circuit in Glasgow this year.
Dave’s family and friends had already purchased tickets and flights, booked accommodation, arranged leave from work and were riding the inevitable ‘high’ that comes with a family member or friend competing at such a big event. All of whom now feel Dave’s disappointment and frustration.
Dave added: “A lot of training was done in preparation and I’d like to again thank Active Nation very much allowing me to do so at their superb facilities in Southampton.
“I’ve fought this reverse in decision hard and with the same belief and determination as I train, but there comes a point where, as hard as it is, I have to move on.”
Dave has decided the best way to do this is to share his passion and knowledge of the sport with others by coaching. He said: “I now fill my time coaching triathlon and have recently formed a Triathlon Club based in Southampton and am thoroughly enjoying passing on the knowledge I have gained from 20 years in the sport of triathlon and seeing others improve and achieve their aims.
“Again, huge thanks for the support I have received from all at Active Nation and its Supporters. It’s been very humbling.
“I’m truly sorry I now can’t be flying the flag for Southampton and Active Nation at the Games but wish you all the best in your training and realising your athletic aims.”
