Commonwealth Games 2014
The countdown to the Glasgow 2014 Commonwealth Games has begun!
The Queen’s Baton Relay – heralding the 2014 Commonwealth Games in Glasgow – has started its journey from Buckingham Palace.
The baton contains the Queen’s hand-written message to the Commonwealth and will visit all 70 competing nations and territories over the next 288 days. Its journey will end at the opening ceremony on 23 July 2014, when the Queen will read the message inside.
The baton was escorted to Buckingham Palace by pipers and cyclist Sir Chris Hoy, a six-time Olympic Gold and double Commonwealth Gold medallist. “The relay unites two billion citizens of the Commonwealth in a celebration of sport, diversity and peace,” he said.
With the launch of the baton relay, athletes from around the world will continue their preparations before finally arriving in the city next year. The coverage and success of the Games are certain to keep us on the edge of our seats and build on the massive inspiration London 2012 had on the nation to get exercising.
Sport England recently revealed that this summer 15.3 million people were playing sport once a week, every week. That is 1.4 million more than in 2005 when London won the bid to host the Olympic and Paralympic Games and indicates that most of the increase seen following the Games in 2012 has been retained. Games organisers will be hoping to build on this legacy further and get more of the UK active.
If you have been inspired to take up the challenge and get fit then now is a great time. To coincide with this Active Nation has launched its #JustTryIt campaign, giving you the chance to try 7 FREE days of sport and exercise, letting you experience our gym, swimming and exercise classes. If you’d like to know more please give us a call. Offer ends 31st December 2013.
