The 2014 Commonwealth Games – Bring It On!

Opening Ceremony Website

Will you be among the one-and-a-half billion people from around the world tuning in to watch tonight’s opening ceremony of the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow?

As well as the 4,500 athletes from the 71 nations and territories of the Commonwealth who have come to the Games, there will be more than 40,000 spectators at Celtic Park and a potential television audience of more than 1.5 billion.

From audacious, visual and musical performances to theatrical moments, the celebration will set the Glasgow skyline alight.

The story of the Commonwealth nations will be aptly represented through the Parade of Nations, the Competitors’ Oath, and the epic finale to the Queen’s Baton Relay as it ends its 190, 000KM and 288 day adventure – including its stop off at Active Nation’s Kids TRYathlon in Southampton. Active Nation’s Southampton Diving Academy Programme Manager Annie Clewlow was also honoured to carry the Queen’s Baton on behalf of the amazing team at the academy.

The next 12 days promise to be an epic journey full of sporting highs and lows that will keep many of us gripped to the TV.

Among the England medal hopefuls is synchronised diver Chris Mears who used to be based at Active Nation’s Quays Swimming and Diving Complex in Southampton, before he relocated earlier this year to Leeds to train alongside his new 3m Springboard partner Jack Laugher.

Other medal hopefuls include Mo Farrah, Sir Bradley Wiggins, the Brownlee brothers, Nicola Adams, Tom Daly, Gemma Gibbons and so many more. Good luck to all the team!

If you get inspired by all of the action in Glasgow – from the diving, to the swimming, to squash, badminton, cycling, gymnastics, athletics – and so much more, why not pop down to your local Active Nation venue and have a brilliant conversation with the team?

There are so many ways that we can help you and your family get active – either through our own facilities and classes – or by linking you up with some of the many clubs and organisations that use our venues every week. Bring it on!

My dad who is 87 years old fulfilled his ambition to travel from Edinburgh to his native Glasgow to attend the boxing on 2nd August. Not only did he get a free ticket for a friend to accompany him but the transport arrangements to get him to the venue were first class and then a volunteer persuaded him to take a wheelchair to and from his seat. He was stopped at security as he had brought water in a hip flask!
Thank you for a great games and great memories.
