As the festive season fades into memory, January can feel a little bleak. For some, the third Monday of January – often referred to as Blue Monday – is labelled the “saddest day of the year.” But what exactly is Blue Monday, and how can we turn it into an opportunity for positivity and action?

What Is Blue Monday?

Blue Monday is a term coined in 2005 by psychologist Dr Cliff Arnall, who calculated the day based on a formula considering factors like debt levels, the weather, post-Christmas blues, and broken New Year’s resolutions. While the science behind it has been debunked, the idea has stuck, perhaps because many of us feel the January lull: short days, cold weather, and the struggle to re-establish routines.

But instead of letting this day define our mood, it’s a great chance to reflect, recharge, and set ourselves up for a brighter year ahead.

Turning Blue Monday Into a Day of Action

Here at Active Nation, we believe in the power of movement and mindfulness to beat the blues. Whether it’s Blue Monday or any other day, you have the power to take control of your mood and wellbeing. Here’s how:

1. Get Moving

Physical activity is a proven mood booster. Whether it’s a brisk walk, a yoga session, or a full-body workout, exercise releases endorphins, the feel-good hormones. If you’re struggling to find motivation, join a class or go with a friend – accountability makes all the difference.

2. Step Outside

Even in the colder months, fresh air and natural light can work wonders for your mental health. A short walk in the park or simply sitting outside with a warm drink can help lift your spirits and reconnect you with nature.

3. Set Small, Achievable Goals

Blue Monday often feels overwhelming because of the pressure to “fix everything” in January. Instead, break your goals into smaller, manageable steps. Success breeds confidence, so start small and build from there.

4. Connect With Others

Social connection is key to wellbeing. Whether it’s meeting a friend for coffee, joining a community group, or just picking up the phone, talking to someone can help you feel less alone.

5. Practise Gratitude

Take a moment to reflect on what you’re grateful for. Writing down three things each day that make you smile – no matter how small – can shift your focus from what’s missing to what you already have.

Make This Monday a Positive One

Blue Monday doesn’t have to be a day of gloom. Instead, it’s an opportunity to acknowledge how you’re feeling and take proactive steps towards self-care and positivity. At Active Nation, we’re here to support you on your journey to better health and happiness – every step of the way.

So, whether it’s signing up for a new fitness class, taking time to rest and recharge, or simply stepping outside for some fresh air, let’s make this Monday – and the rest of the year – one to remember for all the right reasons.

Ready to take the first step? Explore our activities and programmes to help you feel good, move more, and live well.

Let’s turn Blue Monday into Motivation Monday!

The new year is here, and with it comes a fresh opportunity to set intentions for a healthier, happier you. While January often inspires lofty New Year’s resolutions, one simple yet transformative goal can make all the difference: moving more. Physical activity isn’t just about shedding pounds or building muscle; it’s a cornerstone of mental well-being, longevity, and overall quality of life. Let’s explore how embracing movement this January can set the tone for a vibrant and active 2025.
Why Movement Matters
Movement is life. Our bodies are designed to move, and staying active has countless benefits, including:
  • Boosting Mood Naturally: Exercise releases endorphins, the “feel-good” hormones that combat stress and anxiety, helping you feel happier and more balanced.
  • Improving Sleep Quality: Regular physical activity can help you fall asleep faster and enjoy deeper, more restorative rest.
  • Enhancing Energy Levels: Moving more can combat fatigue and increase your productivity throughout the day.
  • Supporting Long-Term Health: Staying active reduces the risk of chronic illnesses like heart disease, type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, and osteoporosis.
How to Start Moving More
Building an active lifestyle doesn’t require a gym membership or hours of free time. Small, consistent changes can lead to big results. Here are some practical ways to incorporate more movement into your day:
  1. Take Daily Walks: Walking is one of the easiest and most accessible forms of exercise. Start with a 10-minute walk and gradually increase your time or distance. Aim for 10,000 steps a day for optimal health benefits.
  2. Stretch Regularly: Incorporate simple stretches into your morning routine or during breaks to improve flexibility and reduce tension. Yoga and Pilates are great for improving posture and mobility.
  3. Embrace Micro-Movements: Use opportunities throughout the day to move, like taking the stairs, parking further away, or standing while working. These small changes can add up to big health benefits over time.
  4. Try New Fitness Activities: Experiment with different workouts like yoga, Zumba, dance, swimming, or cycling to keep things exciting and discover what you enjoy most. Joining a fitness class can also help you stay motivated.
  5. Set Realistic Fitness Goals: Use a fitness tracker or journal to set achievable movement goals, such as 8,000 steps a day or 30 minutes of activity, five days a week. Tracking your progress helps you stay consistent.
Staying Motivated
The key to making movement a habit is finding joy in the process. Here are some tips to stay motivated:
  • Make It Social: Join a walking group, sign up for a yoga or dance class with friends, or find an accountability partner to keep you on track.
  • Celebrate Progress: Reward yourself for milestones, whether it’s a new pair of running shoes, a relaxing spa day, or a fitness gadget to support your journey.
  • Be Kind to Yourself: Life happens, and missing a day isn’t the end of the world. Focus on consistency over perfection and celebrate small wins.
Looking Ahead to 2025
The small steps you take this January can have a ripple effect, setting you up for a healthier, happier 2025. Imagine looking back a year from now, proud of the commitment you made to prioritise movement and well-being. It’s not about being perfect; it’s about showing up for yourself and enjoying the journey.

So, lace up those trainers, roll out that yoga mat, or simply start with a stretch. Let’s make this January the beginning of a more active, joyful life. Here’s to a healthier, happier you—this year and beyond!

At Active Nation, we’re all about encouraging healthier, more active lifestyles. While physical exercise is great for your body, it also has a profound impact on mental health. Movember, the global men’s health campaign, highlights this link and encourages everyone to move more—not just for physical fitness, but for mental wellbeing too.

The Link Between Exercise and Mental Health

Exercise stimulates the release of endorphins, which naturally boost your mood. Whether it’s walking, joining a fitness class, or trying a new outdoor activity, regular movement helps reduce stress and anxiety, improves focus, and enhances sleep quality. For men, who often struggle to seek help for mental health issues, staying active can be a crucial outlet.

How Moving More Helps

1. Reduces Stress – Exercise helps lower cortisol, the body’s stress hormone, making you feel more relaxed.
2. Boosts Mood – Physical activity releases “happy hormones” that improve your mood and overall outlook.
3. Improves Focus – Regular movement sharpens cognitive functions and enhances concentration.
4. Promotes Better Sleep – Physical activity helps regulate sleep cycles, leading to better, more restful sleep.

Movember’s Call to Action: Move for a Cause

Movember’s “Move for Mental Health” challenge encourages participants to commit to moving 60km during the month to represent the 60 men who die by suicide every hour worldwide. It’s a simple yet powerful way to promote mental health awareness while staying active.

Get Active with Active Nation

From group fitness classes like Les Mills to exciting outdoor pursuits such as learning new skills, we’ve got activities to suit everyone. Welcome to Active Nation’s National Walking Month blog post for 2023!

We’re excited to celebrate this month by encouraging everyone to get up and get walking.

May is a time to promote the benefits of walking for physical health, mental well-being, and enjoying the fresh air outdoors. What better way to celebrate than by organising your own walk and raising money for a cause close to your heart?

One of our team members, Lesley Aitken, knows firsthand how beneficial walking can be for your health. At 54, she finds walking a flexible way to stay active and maintain a healthy heart. Lesley enjoys walking on a treadmill at one of our Active Nation venues or in nature. She also finds doing Active Nation Anywhere’s Stretch & Recovery class after a long walk the perfect compliment to her strength training. Lesley enjoys observing nature and the changes around her while walking.

Research shows that even small amounts of physical activity can make a significant difference to our health. In fact, just 11 minutes of daily activity could prevent one in 10 premature deaths. Although most people don’t manage to do the recommended 150 minutes of exercise per week, doing some exercise is better than doing nothing. Even doing half the recommended amount could prevent one in 20 cases of cardiovascular disease and nearly one in 30 cases of cancer.

Join us in telling inactivity to take a hike this May! Let’s get moving and celebrate National Walking Month.

Stretching after your walk is just as important as the walk itself. It can help reduce the risk of injury and muscle soreness, as well as improve your flexibility and range of motion. If you’re not sure where to start with stretching, why not try one of Active Nation Anywhere’s Stretch and Recovery classes? These classes are designed to help you stretch out your muscles and improve your flexibility, making it easier for you to keep up with your walking routine.

If you’re not already a member of Active Nation Anywhere, now is the perfect time to try it out. With a one-month free trial, you can access all of their classes, including Stretch and Recovery, from the comfort of your own home.

Let’s make this National Walking Month the best one yet by encouraging everyone to get active, get outside, and enjoy all the benefits that walking can bring. Your heart, brain, muscles, and mood will thank you for it.

Join us in making a difference to inactivity and premature deaths just by walking daily!
