Healthy Frozen Treats

Here at Active Nation we love Summer for many reasons; the long days, the beautiful weather, the time spent outdoors, and because it’s an ice cream and sorbet time of year! Although we don’t often encourage over indulging in sweet treats, we will make an exception this month. The secret is that our recipes are much healthier than most shop bought ice creams and sorbets! So, try these out for some delicious, guilt-free Summer treats!

Five minute Fro-Yo

Blend 4 cups of a frozen fruit of your choice together with half a cup of plain Greek yoghurt, 2 tsp of vanilla extract, and 3 tbsp of honey. Either serve straight away or freeze for longer if needed!

Ice cream

Pour 1 can (400g / 400ml) of sweetened condensed milk into one bowl and mix 1tsp of flavouring extract of your choice (such as vanilla or mint).

In a separate bowl, whip 2 cups of heavy cream until the cream holds peaks. Gently fold scoops of the cream into the condensed milk until mixture is smooth. Mix in any ingredients you want, such as chocolate chips or fruit. Freeze for at least 5 hours before serving!

Dairy Free Ice Cream

Banana and peanut butter ice cream: Chop 4 ripe bananas into chunks and freeze. Once frozen, blend the bananas with 2tbsp of almond milk until the mixture is smooth. Add 1tbsp of peanut butter and 1tsp of ground cinnamon, then blend again. Freeze mixture for another hour, then enjoy!

Test this recipe out with other ingredients for new flavours!

Sorbets

Lemon Sorbet: Heat 250ml of water and mix in 200g white caster sugar, half of a lemon’s grated zest and the juice of 2-3 lemons. Place in freezer for around 4 hours, mixing the sorbet once an hour, every hour. Serve once it is firm. Alternatively, simply freeze the sorbet and then mix in a food processor before serving.

To make other flavour sorbets, follow the above recipe using the juice of just 1 lemon However, instead of adding lemon zest, add blended fruit of your choice.

Ice-lollies

Berry milk lollies: Chop the tops off 400g ripe strawberries (or use similar weight of fruit of your choice, such as raspberries or blueberries) and blend until smooth. Mix with 400g condensed milk. Pour into ice-lolly moulds and freeze for 4 hours.

Orange lollies: Juice 4 large oranges and grate zest. Using just the juice and the zest, top up with cold water. Add to ice-lolly moulds and freeze for 4 hours.

So there you have it; some delicious, healthier home-made summer treats. Now all you need to decide is which one to make first.
